Lion's Head Kimba & Family The Boerboel was specifically bred to be protective without being aggressive. They are loving, playful, even-tempered, athletic and intelligent, yet they have strong protective instincts. It is a unique combination that blends into an overall wonderful character. Boerboels are confident and fearless. Their sense of self-assurance can present some challenges to training at times. The more you bond with your Boerboel, the more he will want to please and protect you. A Boerboel in your home instinctively becomes the "family" pet. They especially bond to children. They become the child’s best friend, playmate and guardian. When a Boerboel is not actively playing with a child, you will find him in the yard "watching" over the children, ready to alarm and defend as needed. Many a story has been told about a Boerboel spending hour after hour guarding a little baby in a crib. He feels the whole family belongs to him and his sole purpose is to protect them, with his life, if necessary. A Boerboel will sense how you are feeling about a situation, when you feel threatened, when you approve or disapprove of a visitor and respond accordingly. As the owner of a Boerboel you need to pay attention to your reactions and how your dog is responding.
Playing With My Baby (Waaksaam Moses) Typically after 7 months of age you will notice the protective instincts of your Boerboel. He will bark when you have changed something in the room. When you’re walking with the children, he may circle them to slow them down until "Mom & Dad" can catch up, he will bark when someone enters the house without knocking, he will want to be wherever you are and whine if forced to have you out of his sight. If you allow him to attack, he will growl like a lion and fight ferociously without taking his own safety into account. No wonder Aristotle named the forefathers of these dogs: Leontix (sons of lions). The Romans also apparently believed that these dogs were obtained by crossing a dog and a lion. Still today the Boerboel in South African is known to fight leopards You should purchase a Boerboel for his even character. This was and always should be his main quality. Your Boerboel should qualify himself as your best friend.
