Puppies

Reserving a puppy

We make ever effort to match your family with the best pup for your situation. We request a $500.00 deposit to be placed on our waiting list.  Once a deposit is accepted, you are guaranteed a pup. The deposit is dated the day it is received.  When we have a litter of puppies available, we contact each person on our waiting list in the order of deposits received.

Agreement can be found on our contracts page.

We realize that life circumstances can change; therefore we will hold your deposit towards a future litter if you are unable to take the pup you have reserved.

We register our litters with the S.A.B.T. Under the S.A.B.T system each dog must be appraised on its own before the dog can be registered. The dog must be a minimum of 9 months old to be evaluated. Appraisers from the S.A.B.T typically travel to the U.S. one to two times a year to appraise dogs. For more information, click here.

Selecting a pup that is right for you

Selecting a puppy can be a difficult decision. Often we select the pup that’s cute, or shy, or runs up to us, but that doesn't necessarily mean it is the right puppy for you. A large breed pup, like the Boerboel, is only “little” and cute for about 4 months, so the best match to your family is important. Here are a few hints in assisting you to select the right puppy and a quality Boerboel:

Things to consider about the breeder and pup:

  1. Buy from an SABBA (South Africian Boerboel Associaton) registered breeder. This is the parent organization for the breed as it originates in South Africa.

  2. A breeder should be able to tell you genealogical registry of both parents.

  3. If you are able, go "see" both parents. Ask the breeder to handle the parents and see how they interact.

  4. A breeder should be able to tell you the general character of the puppy -is it shy, dominant, active, or cuddly.

  5. The puppy should be well balanced, have a solid muscle construction and appear healthy.

  6. Puppies require training, socialization, love, patience, and attention – which is a daily commitment on the part of the new owner.

Things to consider with children:

  1. This is a large breed dog; males average 150 lbs., and females average 120 lbs.

  2. Boerboel puppies play very rough and require patience and persistence to teach them otherwise.

  3. Do not leave your dog unattended in the yard with small children no matter how trustworthy you may think your dog is. Even though a Boerboel enjoys children, they can accidentally knock over a small child just because of their large size.

  4. Please also consider that some pups have more energy than others, some may nip more than others and puppy teeth are quite sharp. Pups need to be taught manners, but while they are learning, small children should not be left unattended with the puppy.

  5. Be sure you have an area for him outside where he can be safe.

  6. Do insist that neighborhood children abide by the same rules for interacting with your dog that your family follows.

Things to consider about training:

  1. The Boerboel is a dominate & protective breed dog. This is not like owing a lab or a beagle.

  2. The "alpha"/"ruler" of the pack controls the food. So when you give your pup food, make him sit. Then he must learn to wait ‘til you say it’s ok. Also, stay with him while he’s eating, especially at first. When he least expects is put your hand in or near the bowl, if he growls at you, you have to let him understand that this kind of behavior is not acceptable. He will soon learn that he should not growl at you at any time. This is a way of ensuring that your dog will never bite anyone at his food dish.

  3. It is up to you to teach your dog what is accepted and what is not.
